The Royal Insurance building on North John Street was completed in 1903 and spent most of the 20th century as office space. The Aloft conversion, which opened in 2014, was done sensitively – the ornate Edwardian exterior is intact and the interior preserves the original architectural drama while delivering a modern hotel experience.
Aloft is Marriott’s design-forward brand and the rooms reflect that. Loft-style layout, high ceilings, big windows, the kind of open bathroom arrangement that either appeals to you or does not. The rooms are on the smaller side but well-designed enough that it does not feel cramped.
Bar WXYZ on the ground floor is a proper hotel bar that draws non-residents too – decent cocktails, regular DJ nights, and a buzz that the average chain hotel bar completely lacks. The Re:fuel snack area means you can eat late without going out.
Location is excellent. North John Street puts you equidistant between Mathew Street and the waterfront, a short walk from Liverpool Central, James Street and Moorfields stations. Liverpool ONE shopping is five minutes south. Parking is available but this is a city you do not need a car for.
Rates are reasonable for the building quality. Marriott Bonvoy points accepted. North John Street, L2.
