Bacaro – Liverpool

Italian cicchetti bar. Venice-style small plates done properly. Castle Street location.

Bacaro is Venice-style cicchetti – the Italian version of tapas, basically, except these are proper plates with actual thought behind them. Castle Street location is good for after work, evening drinks, proper eating.

Cicchetti are small but not token portions. Stuffed mushrooms, meatballs, things on bread, seafood preparations, vegetables – all designed to be eaten standing or sitting with a drink in hand. Quality Italian ingredients matter here; they’re not hiding behind fancy preparation.

The kitchen understands simplicity. A plate of seafood doesn’t need a story; if the seafood is good, you notice. Tomatoes actually taste like tomatoes. Olive oil is tasted, not drowned in. Garlic and chilli are used to enhance, not dominate.

The drinks are Venetian-focused – prosecco is done right, wines from the Veneto region, Italian beer if you want it. Wines by the glass are fair; bottles are reasonably marked up. Service knows what works with what you’re eating.

Budget £15-£25 per person if you’re doing proper eating with drinks. You can make it cheaper if you’re just having a few things and a glass; you can spend more if you get deeper into the menu. It’s flexible and feels natural.

The space is designed to feel Venetian without being theme-park about it. Bar seating if you want to stand and watch the kitchen; tables if you want to sit. Good spacing, lighting that lets you see the food, music that doesn’t dominate.

Gets busy evenings and weekends. Walk-ins work but booking helps. Quieter lunch times if you can manage a weekday. The whole dynamic is designed to be social – you’re meant to eat things, share, drink, and have time to chat.
