Belzan – Liverpool

Natural wine bar with proper food. Smithdown Road local that actually respects both things.

Belzan is a neighbourhood place that takes both its wine and its food seriously. Smithdown Road doesn’t have loads of spots like this, so when one opens that cares about quality, locals notice.

The wine list is natural wine focused – stuff with character, often organic or biodynamic, rarely the usual corporate list suspects. Prices are fair; they’re not marking up just because it’s natural wine. Staff actually know the wines and won’t make you feel stupid for asking what something tastes like.

The food is French-influenced bistro style without being aggressively French about it. Expect things like proper charcuterie, cheese selections that matter, seasonal French techniques applied to decent ingredients. Mains might be beef, fish cooked properly, pasta dishes that make sense. Portions are reasonable – you’re not rolling out overstuffed.

Cooking is straightforward and respectful of ingredients. A piece of fish doesn’t need a story; it should taste like good fish. They understand that simplicity isn’t laziness when everything used is quality.

Pricing sits around £20-£35 for mains, starters £6-£12. Sharing plates if you want to mess about. Wines run £5-£12 a glass, bottles £20-£60 with decent range in between. Good value for the quality you’re getting.

The space is casual-nice – not trying to impress anyone, just a proper wine bar with good food. Dim lighting, decent tables, the kind of place where you can have a conversation or sit quietly. Lunches are quieter, evenings get busy.

This is what neighbourhoods need – places that care about what they’re doing without making it a performance. Book if you’re going evenings; lunches are easier walk-ins.
