Hafla Hafla – Liverpool

Palestinian street food. Smithdown Road. Proper cooking, good value, real flavours.

Hafla Hafla is Palestinian street food – the kind you’d find in Jerusalem or Ramallah, done properly on Smithdown Road. It’s no-nonsense food that doesn’t need theatre, just good cooking and fair prices.

The menu is straightforward. Hummus made fresh, so it’s light and tasty, not the dense stuff you get from a tub. Baba ganoush is proper – smoky from real charring of the aubergine, balanced with lemon and tahini. Za’atar bread is the right vehicle, seasoned with the herb mix and olive oil.

Grilled meats are the main event. Chicken shawarma, lamb kofta, things seasoned with proper spices and grilled to order. Meat is tender and the seasoning is balanced – spice adds complexity without just burning. Served in flatbreads or with rice depending on what you order.

Flatbreads are made fresh, which you notice. Warm, flexible, proper vehicles for the meat and dips. Not something pre-made and reheated. Salads are fresh – tomato, parsley (lots of it), dressed properly.

Pricing is genuinely budget-friendly. Mains are £8-£16 depending on the meat and size. Dips and bread are a few quid. You can eat very well under fifteen quid. That matters and it’s part of the ethos.

The space is casual – counter ordering, basic seating, designed for quick eating or settling in with friends. Music plays, atmosphere is warm without being forced. It’s community space as much as restaurant.

Service is straightforward and knows the menu. They’re not trying to sell you more; they just want to feed you well. Quick service during lunch rush, takes time during busy evenings but that’s just volume.

Smithdown Road has become a proper food street and this fits naturally. Gets busy evenings, quieter lunches. Weekday afternoons are perfect if you want to eat without rushing.
