Hope Street is the road that runs between Liverpool’s two cathedrals – the Anglican pile at the top, Paddy’s Wigwam at the bottom. In between sits a stretch of Georgian terraces and Victorian buildings that make up the best of the Georgian Quarter. The Hope Street Hotel occupies a former carriage works from 1860, converted with intelligence and care.
The hotel is independently owned and it shows in the details. Rooms are well-proportioned with good natural light, quality beds and bathrooms that do not feel like an afterthought. The roof terrace is small but the views across to the Anglican Cathedral are exceptional, particularly at dusk.
The London Carriage Works on the ground floor is one of Liverpool’s better restaurants – proper food, local suppliers, a wine list that has been thought about. Breakfast here sets you up for the day.
The neighbourhood is excellent for exploring on foot. Philharmonic Hall is three minutes away. The Everyman Theatre is at the bottom of the hill. The Phil pub – one of the great British Victorian pubs – is across the road. Every major museum is within a twenty-minute walk.
Hope Street Hotel is not the cheapest option in Liverpool but it is the most authentically Liverpool hotel of the lot. Hope Street, L1.
