William Jessop was the engineer who designed Princes Dock in the 1820s, and the building named after him sits right on the dock edge, giving Malmaison Liverpool one of the better waterfront positions in the city. The hotel opened in 2011 as part of the wider Princes Dock development and has settled into being a reliable mid-to-upper mid-range option.
Malmaison rooms are consistently good across the brand – dark wood, rich fabrics, decent beds, proper showers. Liverpool is no exception. Superior rooms and suites on higher floors have the best dock and river views. Standard rooms face inward or onto the surrounding development but are perfectly comfortable.
The brasserie is solid Malmaison fare – straightforward dishes done well, a decent wine list, good for a business dinner or a pre-theatre meal. The bar is lively on weekend evenings when the dock area fills up.
Princes Dock puts you at the north end of the waterfront, a ten-minute walk from the Pier Head and the Three Graces, and a short taxi ride or brisk walk into the city centre. The Cunard Building and Port of Liverpool Building are visible from the hotel terrace.
