Mowgli is Indian street food that respects the original concept. Bold Street location has the right energy for this kind of food – it’s supposed to feel casual and social, and it does.
The menu is plates designed for sharing – rotis, curries, grilled things, vegetables done with spice that makes sense. Nothing is trying to blow your head off with heat; flavour comes first, spice enhances. They understand that good Indian cooking is balanced, not just chilli.
The cooking is real street food technique. A dosa is crispy and the filling is properly cooked. Curries are built with proper foundations – spices toasted, aromatics used right, things cooked to time. You taste the individual spices rather than them all blurring into generic curry taste.
Grilled items are handled well. Kebabs have proper char, meat is seasoned and timed right. Tandoor work is obvious – high heat, proper rotation, technique that shows. Breads are cooked fresh, puffing up properly rather than sitting around.
Expect to spend £15-£25 per person for a good feed with drinks. Starters/small plates are £4-£8, curries and mains £6-£12, breads £2-£3. Good value for the quality. Drinks are a proper craft beer selection (they take this seriously), wine, soft options.
The beer pairing is worth paying attention to – they know what works with spices and richness. Beers are chosen to complement the food, not just served randomly. Staff can guide you if you’re not sure.
The room is designed to feel street market casual without being actually uncomfortable. Tables are close enough for the social thing, music is playing, lighting is right. It’s busy and vibrant without being loud-obnoxious.
Gets hammered evenings and weekends. Booking is essential Friday/Saturday. Weekday lunches are quieter and good value. The whole thing is designed for groups more than couples, but it works fine if you’re two people.
