Roscoe Head – Liverpool

Roscoe Head is the neighbourhood local that actually deserves the name. Roscoe Street location means it’s genuinely serving the area and the locals who come here come for the pub itself, not because they wandered in.

The real ale selection is serious. They’re CAMRA registered, which means real cask ales from good breweries, properly stored and served. Rotation keeps things interesting. Staff know their ales and can tell you about them without being annoying.

The room is basic and completely functional. Small bar, seating area, decorations that have been up for years, the kind of place where the room doesn’t matter because it’s about the pub, not the aesthetics.

The crowd is genuinely local. Regulars who’ve been coming for years, people from the neighbourhood, a few visitors who’ve heard it’s decent. Everyone sits together without pretence, conversation flows naturally, it’s properly social.

Pricing is fair – cask ales around £4-£5 a pint. That’s not cheap but it’s honest pricing for good quality beer. No gimmicks, no overcharging because of reputation.

Food is limited – crisps, snacks, maybe pies depending on what day. It’s not the point of coming here. The beer and the pub are the point.

No booking, no tables reserved. It’s a proper pub – you come in and find a space. Might be standing room only during busy times but that’s part of the dynamic. Evening rush is proper busy; quiet times are properly quiet.

This is what a proper neighbourhood local should be. Good beer, real people, no nonsense. The kind of place you’d come to regularly if you lived near it. Just a pub that’s done the basics right for long enough that quality is the default.
