Salt House Tapas – Liverpool

Salt House is Spanish tapas done without the tourist template nonsense. Hanover Street location works because they’ve designed it to feel like an actual Spanish bar, not a themed interpretation of one.

Tapas arrive as you order them, which means you’re not getting everything at once and they’re timed to be eaten fresh. They’re honest portions – this is food designed to be eaten standing at a bar or across a table with drinks, not drowning you with plate sizes.

The cooking is Spanish foundations – proper croquetas, seafood done simply, cured meats treated with respect. You’ll find jamón, manchego, conservas (tinned fish done properly), things cooked to order. Nothing sitting under heat lamps; timing matters for this food.

The drinks programme is where it gets interesting. Sherry is done right – amontillado, fino, oloroso – and the bar staff can tell you what works with what you’re eating. Vermouth is treated seriously. Spanish wine and beer. This is the drink pairing done properly and naturally.

Spend £20-£35 per person with drinks. You can do it cheaper if you’re just having a few plates and a sherry; you can spend more if you go deeper into the menu. Nothing forced about the pricing.

The space feels properly Spanish without being a recreation. Bar seating works if you’re alone or with someone; tables accommodate groups. Lighting is right – you can actually see the food, not eating in candlelit shadow. Music is playing but doesn’t dominate conversation.

Service knows Spanish food culture – they understand that tapas is about variety and tasting across the menu. They’ll suggest things that work together without acting like you should already know.

Gets properly busy evenings, quieter at lunch. Walk-ins work but booking is safer. Late afternoon is perfect if you can swing it – between lunch rush and dinner proper.
