The Art School – Liverpool

Modern British in a proper converted school building. Real attention to detail with the cooking.

The Art School lives in an actual converted art school in the city centre (you’d never guess). The room is high-ceilinged, proper, without trying too hard. It works because they just left good bones alone.

The food is modern British that doesn’t announce itself with trendy plating or microscopic portions. Starters might be hand-made pasta, proper seafood, things cooked with technique that doesn’t show off. Mains are confident – beef that’s been treated right, fish that tastes fresh, vegetables that matter.

They do both tasting menus and à la carte, which gives you flexibility. The tasting menu runs around £65-£85 with optional wine pairing. À la carte mains sit in the £22-£32 range, starters £8-£14. It’s fine dining pricing but without the pretence that comes with a lot of that territory.

The kitchen is genuinely skilled. You notice it in how they handle flavour – nothing masked or overdone, everything given space. A sauce doesn’t need to coat everything; it should complement what it’s on. They understand that.

Service is attentive and knows their food. They’ll tell you what’s in something without making it feel like you should already know. Wine list is solid – good range, fair markups, and they’re happy to suggest something reasonable rather than just the fancy stuff.

Lunch menu is better value than dinner if you’re watching it – similar cooking, less expensive. Set lunch around £25-£35. They take bookings but walk-ins sometimes work, especially lunch. Gets properly busy Friday and Saturday nights.

The whole point is serious cooking in a relaxed space. No unnecessary ceremony, just good work being done in a kitchen that knows what matters.
