The Ship & Mitre is an independent pub done properly. Dale Street location means it’s accessible, but the ale selection and commitment to quality means it’s genuinely good rather than just convenient.
The real ale selection is the headline. They rotate regularly, work with local and regional breweries, understand cask conditioning and serve it right. Cask is the focus because cask ales done properly are better than anything from a keg.
Craft beer is also taken seriously. They work with breweries making interesting things, not just big craft beer brands everyone knows. You’ll find stuff you wouldn’t see elsewhere, which is the point of an independent pub.
The bar staff actually know what they’re serving. Can talk about breweries, flavour profiles, what pairs with what. It’s not faked knowledge; these people drink and understand beer seriously.
Food is optional – pies, toasties, snacks. It’s not trying to be a gastropub; it’s a proper pub that happens to have decent food if you’re hungry. Quality ingredients, done simply.
Pricing is fair. Cask ales maybe £4-£5 a pint. Craft beers £4-£6 depending on ABV. Food cheap if you get it – pies maybe £5-£8. It’s not trying to gouge despite being a good quality spot.
The room is proper pub – bit worn in a good way, character, tables that work. Not renovated to death or theme-parked. It’s just a pub that’s been maintained as a pub.
Atmosphere is social. Mix of locals, enthusiasts, people who just like a good pint. Conversation happens, darts or pool might be on, it’s relaxed. Quieter afternoons, busier evenings and weekends.
No booking – it’s a pub. Walk in and find a space or stand at the bar. Might wait during peak times but it moves.
